I’m going to show you step-by-step methods you’ll follow with illustrative screenshots to easily create your own website with only N28,050 ($33) for the first year. You don’t need any previous knowledge to be able to do this successfully. I’m going to help you achieve that.

  • Register a domain name for free and save N10,625 ($12.5)

This guide will teach you everything you need to successfully create and host your website. Don’t worry if you don’t have any previous experience. I’ll take you by the hand and show you practical ways you can do this easily.

But before that, let’s quickly know why you would need a website.

Why Do You Need a Website?

In this post, I shared great ideas on how you can leave your legacy when you’re gone.

Of course, I only use the article to demonstrate one thing: that everyone’s got an idea. And this idea becomes great and rewarding when we put a little effort into it and make it worthwhile.

And one of the ways to make our ideas worthwhile and rewarding is to create a platform for it.

Whether you’re a writer or a public speaker, a blogger, a graphics designer, or an entrepreneur, you need a platform to exhibit your skills and talent.

It’s platforms Seun Osewa, Linda Ikeji, Omojuwa and Suraj Oyewale (Jarus) have that made them who they are today.

Now as a business person, think of the many things you would achieve when you build the right platform like owning your own website.

Oh wait. Is that what you’re thinking? That you can also own your ideas on a free blog right?

Good. But hear this:

Of course, you can, but you won’t have the freedom needed to express yourself properly and make a lasting impact on others – to be able to spread your tentacle.

Moreover, many people won’t take you seriously. Let’s say you open a mediocre.wordpress.com blog now and starts writing your stuff there, sharing your great ideas with the world. And suddenly WordPress says ‘hey! That’s enough for you. You can’t go beyond that place.’

  • You can’t use custom email such as [email protected] (like mine: [email protected]).
  • You can’t use fantastic plugins and premium themes that will make your sites look attractive and professional.
  • You can’t do affiliate marketing and make money doing what you enjoy. To mention a few.

And yes, that’s no kidding.

On WordPress.com or blogspot.com blog, you can’t do a whole lot of things because it’s not a self-hosted site. You could also be kicked out anytime. Remember, the popular Nigerian blogger, Jide Ogunsanya was once kicked out from his blogger platform. Then recently it was Linda Ikeji’s turn. They both came back on track though.

But if you open a yourdomainname.com site today, you will have enough freedom to:

  • Create an audience
  • Share your ideas and expertise
  • Win people’s trust
  • Impact on lives
  • Sell products and render services
  • Publish books
  • Land speaking engagements
  • And most handsomely fulfil your dreams

When you invest a little and get on a platform that works well for you, the freedom is endless. You will have a lovely website like my own, thenigerianweb.com, your hosting account and the domain name by installing WordPress CMS. Now that’s what true freedom means! You’d enjoy all you want to do with your own ideas.

Whoever you are, you can do this. You don’t need to know how to write code or be a programming guru. No. You just need to be willing to make a difference.

If you’re feeling like this isn’t your field, don’t worry. You’re not alone. If I had thought the same thing and folded my arms some time ago when I too was looking for a platform to showcase my ideas, you probably wouldn’t have known about this blog today.

To succeed in life we must sometimes venture into the unknown, into some things we ordinarily don’t think we could do. And that often brings the best out of us.

Brian Tracy is a smart lad; he captures this succinctly when he said:

Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow when you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.

Even Thomas Jefferson agrees with Tracy when he said:

Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.

How to Build a WordPress Website or Blog

To set up a self-hosted website, you need to have:

  • A hosting account (you need your Mastercard to buy this)
  • A domain name which I’ll show you how to get below for free

Here’s the step-by-step approach on how to build a WordPress website or blog:

This tutorial I wish to share with you for free contains my affiliate link which means that when you purchase your own hosting through the link, I get paid a commission, for introducing you to a great offer – at no cost to you, of course.

Don’t get it wrong. This isn’t why I recommend it; I do so because I find that they offer fantastic services which you could benefit from. Besides, all other web-hosting services also have affiliate programmes for their valuable customers.

The step-by-step process on how to build a WordPress website or blog:

  1. You need to purchase a hosting account that comes with a free domain name from Hostgator.

A hosting account is where you house your website online. It’s what gives you the freedom to launch your great ideas to the entire world and impact lives positively. I recommend Hostgator now because of their fantastic services. They offer a 24/7 customer support service. They’re one of the foremost web hosts on the net and it’s easy and affordable. They’re currently running a promo of a 60% discount. So you only pay N28,050 ($33) for the first year. And where other hosting accounts sell a domain name for N10,625 ($12.5), Hostgator gives you for FREE. You only need to click the “Sign Up Now” button to get started.

Note: To get all the bonuses I earlier promised, you need to go through this link. Otherwise, you won’t get those mouth-watering bonuses.

  • After signing up, choose from any of the three plans you wish to start with.

If you’re just starting out, the Hatchling plan is cool for you though I really recommend the Baby plan. That’s what I use for this blog and I’ve never had any problem.

  • Having decided on the plan you want to go for, click “Buy now” and register your preferred domain name like thenigerianweb.com. Make sure you don’t use numerals and hyphens. Try to make it short and easy to remember. If the domain name is available, it automatically brings it out. Otherwise, you’d have to choose another.

Next, key in your personal details and correct Mastercard details. Use 110001 or 00176 or 23401 for Nigeria zip code.

Then uncheck “Protect your site from hackers with help from SiteLock”, “Backup Your Hard work (Powered by CodeGuard)”, unless you can afford them. If you fail to uncheck them, you’d be charged for them.

You must provide a valid and correct email as you’ll receive valuable information through it. You must know that the renewal of the hosting account is automatic, so use your own ATM Mastercard. Then click “Checkout Now”.

NB: In case your sign up is rejected owing to either insufficient balance or incorrect card details, you must make sure you don’t click “Accept” when you get an email or a pop-up window offering you some discount. If you do, you’ll end up paying a higher price to renew your account.

What do you do instead? Come back to this tutorial here and click the sign up link to restart your registration.

But if you registered successfully, you should see this image below.

Next, install WordPress on your domain name.

Select your preferred domain name version. I’d advise you to choose the one without “www” and click the “Next” button.

This takes you to the next page where you’ll fill out your site name, username, password and email address. Please note that you can’t change the username later. You could use the same password used earlier. Henceforth, the username and password will be your login credentials whenever you want to post on your new site.

Then the next thing is, Hostgator will provide you with your WordPress login details as below.

Login to your self-hosted website and publish your first post.

At this point, you really need not worry about your first post. Meaning, it doesn’t have to be perfect; it’s merely to test your new website.

To do this, go to http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin (“yourdomain” here means the name of your new website). Then login with your username and password used in the step above.

On the next page, you’ll find the dashboard, where you do all the settings on your website. It’s located on the left-hand side of the screen menu. Hover your mouse on “Posts” and click “Add New” from the sub-menus that will pop up.

Next, enter the title of your post in the first space and then on the second, paste the content of your post and then click “Publish” which is by the right-hand side.

Then click “View post” to see how your post looks like and, as it will appear to your readers.

Yippee! You may now begin to share your great ideas with the world, impact lives and make a difference.

NB: Normally, the whole process above takes just 10 to 15 minutes. But because this is probably your first time, 20 minutes or less should be okay.

However, if you’re lazy like me 😆 (well, I should believe you’re not) and cannot follow the step-by-step approach above, I’d be glad to help. You can send me a mail at [email protected]. I’ll help you out for FREE.

Bonus #2: Free SSL Certificate

This is the second bonus I promised you earlier. Having completed the steps above, go to your Dashboard. Then go to plugins and click “Add New”. Next, type “Really Simple SSL” in the search box and click enter. Locate “Really Simple SSL” from among the options and install it. After installation, activate the plugin.

Boom! Your site will now be pointed to https:// instead of the http:// it came with.

Bonus #3: My Free Ebook
