How to Build a WordPress Website or Blog

To set up a self-hosted website, you need to have:

• A hosting account (you need your Mastercard to buy this)
• A domain name which I’ll show you how to get below for free

Here’s the step-by-step approach on how to build a WordPress website or blog:

The step-by-step process on how to build a WordPress website or blog:

1. You need to purchase a hosting account that comes with a free domain name from Hostgator.

A hosting account is where you house your website online. It’s what gives you the freedom to launch your great ideas to the entire world and impact lives positively. • Having decided on the plan you want to go for, click “Buy now” and register your preferred domain name like thenigerianweb.com. Make sure you don’t use numerals and hyphens. Try to make it short and easy to remember. If the domain name is available, it automatically brings it out. Otherwise, you’d have to choose another.

Next, key in your personal details and correct Mastercard details. Use 110001 or 00176 or 23401 for Nigeria zip code.

Then uncheck “Protect your site from hackers with help from SiteLock”, “Backup Your Hard work (Powered by CodeGuard)”, unless you can afford them. If you fail to uncheck them, you’d be charged for them.

You must provide a valid and correct email as you’ll receive valuable information through it. You must know that the renewal of the hosting account is automatic, so use your own ATM Mastercard. Then click “Checkout Now”.

NB: In case your sign up is rejected owing to either insufficient balance or incorrect card details, you must make sure you don’t click “Accept” when you get an email or a pop-up window offering you some discount. If you do, you’ll end up paying a higher price to renew your account.

At this stage, your hosting control panel is displayed. Look for the icon “WordPress” and click it.

Congrats! Now you have a hosting account and a free domain name.

Next, install WordPress on your domain name.

Select your preferred domain name version. I’d advise you to choose the one without “www” and click the “Next” button.

This takes you to the next page where you’ll fill out your site name, username, password and email address. Please note that you can’t change the username later. You could use the same password used earlier. Henceforth, the username and password will be your login credentials whenever you want to post on your new site.

Then the next thing is, Hostgator will provide you with your WordPress login details as below.

Login to your self-hosted website and publish your first post.

At this point, you really need not worry about your first post. Meaning, it doesn’t have to be perfect; it’s merely to test your new website.

To do this, go to http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin (“yourdomain” here means the name of your new website). Then login with your username and password used in the step above.

On the next page, you’ll find the dashboard, where you do all the settings on your website. It’s located on the left-hand side of the screen menu. Hover your mouse on “Posts” and click “Add New” from the sub-menus that will pop up.

Next, enter the title of your post in the first space and then on the second, paste the content of your post and then click “Publish” which is by the right-hand side.

Then click “View post” to see how your post looks like and, as it will appear to your readers.

Yippee! You may now begin to share your great ideas with the world, impact lives and make a difference.

NB: Normally, the whole process above takes just 10 to 15 minutes. But because this is probably your first time, 20 minutes or less should be okay.
